Every woman longs for “happily ever after”. But before that fairytale ending, like it or not, there’s something every couple has to go through: The wedding day.
When I got engaged, a lavish wedding ceremony wasn’t within my financial reach. But that never meant my husband and I had to compromise the celebration of our love in any way.
Firstly, it’s important for a couple to align their expectations.
Every couple is different, and there’s no need – and no pressure – to replicate that beautiful wedding you attended.
365 DAYS TO D-DAY
To get more bang for your wedding buck, start planning early. We’re talking at least 12 months before your big day!
This is when you begin your hunt for wedding deals and promotions. It’s also time to start looking for wedding bands, gowns, photographers, videographers, and make-up artists.
Most of all, remember to book your wedding date with the Registry of Marriage!
Six months leading up to your big day, start consolidating your guest list. Seek the approval of both sides – it’s important to get everyone on the same page. At this point, you can also start checking off your list of wedding vendors: Catering, music, flowers, and so forth.
If your wedding venue does not provide wedding favours, remember to shop for your own. And while you’re at it, prepare wedding stationery such as guest books, thank-you cards, and so forth.
All done? Go book your honeymoon!
In the last quarter, use your finalised guest list to plan the seating arrangement. Sort out the rest of your actual day programme, including the transport arrangements for your bridal party and guests. Now is a good time to send out reminders for a solemnisation officiant and venue.
One month before your wedding day, finalise all other ancillary arrangements, like the arrival of your wedding gown.
Pro-tip: “Season” your wedding shoes on hen’s night, as opposed to wearing them for the first time on your big day.
Your feet will thank you later!
Finally, make it a point to get sufficient rest the night before. It’s your big day, and you have every right to enjoy it. So don’t be afraid to leave the execution to your bridal party or wedding planner.
